“In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, flow like a rock.” (≈ Thomas Jefferson)
Even if a dance can be taught as separate steps, the potential of the dance lies in honoring its principles and adding elegance to the process.
When songwriter Liam Sternberg watched people adapting to the movement patterns of a ferry in rocky water he noticed that they developed an awkward but ingenious way of walking to keep their balance.
The poses reminded him of figures in Ancient Egyptian paintings. They probably didn’t think much of it themselves but they had found a walking strategy to cope with the principles of unsteady ground. In fact, every unsteady ground you have encountered has developed your toolbox of strategies.
Your decisions and actions are guided by strategies and there is no known limit to how many you can have. One situation may call for being more introverted, another more extroverted. These kinds of strategies are not in your genes; they are tools of mind that you can develop into useful behaviors.
